Publish America

Two big articles this week on the company Publish America: One in the Washington Post and another off the AP.

What it seems to come down to is if you want to be taken seriously, watch out for these guys and others like them. If you just want a book out so your friends can see you in print, they are a viable option (no, I'm not knocking the latter...for some it's all they care about and that's fine).

Excelsior.

Wow, that's quite an article in the Post. For all that I'm a big believer that e-zines are a viable option these days for short story writers, I'm still old school in my belief that vanity publishing is bad. I mean, at least these people who got duped by Publish America didn't shell out money to get their books accepted but it's still hardly any better. (Especially considering they'd signed their rights over for 7 years, even if their book did get attention from bigger publishing houses, sheesh.) But like you said, you're just not going to get any credibility that way.

It's also sad because many desperate writers are quite vulnerable to this sort of scam.
