Heb Faq

This post will remain perpetually at the end, with a perma-link in the sidebar so people can find it if they want. I'll put answers to questions here that I get regularly that will help you know who the hell I am. It will be updated as needed.

Who is Hebomeros?

I am writer of microscopic note. Currently I live in Greenbelt, Maryland. Not too far outside of Washington, D.C. I've had some fiction pubs in a few regional magazines and some anthologies and I publish book reviews pretty regularly in a few different magazines. My current day job is as a librarian in a public library in Northern Virginia.

Where did you get your name

Hebdomeros is a pen name. I stole it from the title of a novel by de Chirico. A great book if you like early 20th century experimental work.

Who is Miss L?

Miss L is my wife. She was once my girlfriend, which I'm told is how it usually works.

How long have you been blogging?

This space started up in October of 2004. Although I was aware of blogs well before that, I didn't think much about them until two things happened. I heard an interview on the radio with Terry Teachout on his blog About Last Night and how he felt it was a new and open direction for criticism. Shortly after that I ran into blog entries reviewing fiction I had published in print magazines. The rest, I guess, is history.

What's the purpose of your blog?

The primary purpose is to review books I don't normally get to cover, or review books in ways different than I can in the mags I write for. I don't see myself as a source for heavy-duty criticism so much as a place to promote writers and writing I really enjoy. I also write about arts events I go to (plays, museum exhibits, films, happenings, etc), interesting things that come up in life, etc.

What kind of writing do you like?

All kinds.

I grew up reading science fiction and fantasy. In college I devoured the realism taught in school, and later developed a love for some experimental authors. But really I'll read anything people hand me. More than anything I like to be surprised. Unfortunately, this gets harder and harder as I get older and read more.

You sometimes review comic books/graphic novels/sequential art. Do you really feel they have the same merit as literature?

The short answer is yes. If you want the long answer, email me and I'm happy to discuss it with you.

Will you review my book? Where do send it?

Possibly. Please email me if interested in having a review of your book up here. If I've reviewed your work in the past (especially if I liked it) chances are I'd love to review your new work. If I haven't reviewed your work in the past tell me (briefly) what your book is about and I'll get back to you. I'll tell you where to send it if I want to review it. If I really like your book I may even try to get a review in a pub I write for, but no promises. Please don't email me an attachment file of your work to review without asking first. I'm pretty wary of viruses and will probably delete if I'm not expecited it. Be aware it might take a few weeks for me to get to your book. I have a pretty big pile.

Will you add my blog/my site to your links?

Maybe. Email me or leave a comment on one of my posts. I'll take a look. I'm not a serial adder, meaning I won't add you just to add you so you will add a link for me on your own site. I actually read all the pages I link to with varying degrees of regularity. I use bloglines to track a number of other blogs I don't link to, but if I like your site and find I read it on some sort of regular basis I will gladly add a link for you.
